About the Artist

ABOUT JEANNE DUNN

Jeanne Dunn is a painter living in Los Angeles and working in Inglewood. Her large-scale, painterly works serve as a bellwether to the destruction of forest ecology as we know it, climate change, and the agency of trees. Her painted arboreal giants of the earth are sentinels, early warning systems, and ultimately, in their andromorphic depiction, lend a provocative look at how humans are intertwined with nature.

Dunn’s work has been exhibited in the United States and Europe and is in private, corporate, and museum collections. She was included in several publications, including “The Artist Portrait Project: A Photographic Memoir of Portrait Sessions with San Diego Artists, 2006-2016,” by Jennifer G. Spencer (She Writes Press, 2018) and “Feminists Who Changed America,” by Barbara J. Love, ed. (University of Illinois Press, Urbana, and Chicago, 2006).

She has a Master’s in Fine Art and Painting from San Diego State University (SDSU) and a Bachelor of Art in Art and Art Education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After living in San Diego for thirty years, and teaching art for fifteen years at SDSU, she relocated to Los Angeles in 2012.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m keenly interested in how living beings are materially interconnected by the air, water and soils sustaining us. Correspondingly, I engage with our current mental and moral climate by painting pictorial allegories about Nature. My paintings and collages serve as an investigation of the paradoxes of a subject that is simultaneously life-giving, life-preserving, and deadly. Trees are used both as metaphors of our collective fate and harbingers of wholeness. The compositions, colors, marks, and strokes comprising my visual language start in contemporary realism and then develop into allegorical scenarios inviting multiple levels of interpretation and message. I smear, scrape, cut, wipe, cover over, obliterate, and repaint aspects of the imagery to depict my connection to the immediate environment around me, remembered places, and relentless change. Since my subject is gargantuan, a painting larger than human scale suggests edges and boundaries extending beyond peripheral vision.
